Which style of Inspection Chamber is best – Plastic or Concrete?

When it comes to selecting which style of inspection chamber is best for your drainage system, there are several variables to consider. Here’s a useful guide to help you decide between plastic and concrete.

What do you need to consider when selecting an inspection chamber?

Your choice of inspection chamber depends on the diameter and depth of the chamber and whether man access is required.

They can be manufactured in both precast concrete and High-Density Polyethylene plastic (HDPE), providing a choice of materials. The best option depends upon your specific application.

The size of the inspection chamber is a major factor when choosing between materials. For example, 320mm, 450mm and 600mm chambers are generally supplied in plastic. Anything above this size can be supplied in concrete rings, bespoke pre-benched concrete bases or prefabricated HDPE chambers.

What are the different styles of man access inspection chambers?

Standard concrete rings – These need to be surrounded by concrete and benched on-site, which can be time-consuming. They also have more health and safety implications as workers must operate in deep excavations.

Wide wall concrete rings – Similar to the above but do not require surrounding in concrete due to their extra-thick walls.

Pre-benched concrete chambers – These come with all benching and pipe connections pre-installed. While more expensive upfront, they save time and money on-site and are only used with wide wall rings. Note: they can be heavy to handle.

Prefabricated HDPE chambers – These are typically more expensive to buy but cheaper to install because they are lightweight, quick to fit, and require less heavy machinery — making them much safer to use on-site.

Both materials are extremely durable and designed for long lifespans.
