Frequently Asked Questions
How do you use a grit bin?
Before anything, make sure to fill your grit bin with grit or salt that can be spread on icy surfaces. To use, take a small scoop or shovel and apply the grit evenly on pavements, driveways, or any slippery areas that you need to cover.
It helps to focus on high-traffic spots and places where people are likely to walk. Be mindful not to use too much, as a little grit goes a long way.
After applying, it's a good idea to give it a little time to work, and if needed, you can use a shovel to spread it around. Close the lid of the grit bin to keep the contents dry and ready for the next use.
What size grit bin do I need?
The size of your grit bin depends on the space you need to cover. If it's a big area, like main roads or large car parks, you'll want a larger bin to hold plenty of grit.
For smaller areas, like small business car parks or housing estates, a smaller grit bin works well.
At Cotterill Civils, we offer Harlequin grit bins from 150kg to 400kg and 700kg. Give us a call on 0121 351 3230, we’ll be more than happy to help with questions
Are grit bins for public use?
It's a bit of both.
If there's a grit bin put down by the council nearby, you can use the grit on public roads and pathways, but not on your own driveway or a private road.
With that said, you can't take grit from the bin and sell it. If you need a grit bin for your home or business, you'll have to buy one on your own.
Luckily, at Cotterill Civils, we offer grit bins in different sizes to suit your needs. Get in touch with the team to find out more.
When should you use grit?
You should use grit when roads and paved areas become icy or slippery due to freezing temperatures or snow.
Grit is mainly used throughout winter and icy conditions to help prevent trips, slips and accidents caused by the weather. If you’re expecting snow overnight, putting grit down before it gets icy can work as a precaution to stop ice from forming.
