About the Business
Berryfields Farm is a long-established family business based in Central England, renowned for producing high-quality pig meat from a modern, welfare-focused 750-sow unit. Their commitment to hygiene, sustainability, and animal health drives continuous investment in environmentally sound infrastructure.
The Challenge
Farm owner Chris Barber approached Andy Cotterill to design and construct a concrete muck midden capable of containing all straw-based waste from the sow unit’s cleaning operations.
The project required a long-lasting structure that could:
- Withstand daily operation by heavy machinery such as loading shovels
- Ensure full containment of effluent draining from the muck
- Comply with environmental and welfare regulations
The Results
Chris Barber commented:
“Having worked with Andy Cotterill before, I knew Cotterill Civils would be the right choice for this project. Andy proposed a vertical cantilever concrete panel design that eliminated the need for steel columns — avoiding long-term corrosion from effluent. The work was completed on schedule, the team were professional, and the finished result exceeded expectations. I would recommend Cotterill Civils to anyone needing groundworks, building foundations, concrete flooring, or earthworks.”
Outcome Highlights
- Durable concrete panel system built to last
- Effluent safely contained, protecting local land and watercourses
- Completed on time and within budget
