What is Stormwater Attenuation & Why Do You Need It?

There’s no question about it – the weather is taking a turn for the worse. In recent years, severe storms and flooding have become commonplace, and even if they hadn’t, winter is just around the corner – with floodwaters threatening long-term damage to buildings and infrastructure.

So how can you protect yourself from the damage and chaos caused by the coming storms and the rising tide of floodwater?

The answer is Stormwater Attenuation. But what does that mean?

Stormwater Attenuation Means Capturing Rainwater and Releasing It Slowly

The damage done by storms isn’t just directly on the site of flooding but on everything downstream. As rainwater drains away, it floods lower-lying areas even more severely — and once those areas reach saturation, the floodwaters stop running off.

By capturing rainwater in large containers and releasing it slowly, this risk is reduced — floodwaters are released at a manageable rate, preventing downstream flooding.

At Cotterill Civils, flood attenuation systems are built using a wide range of components to provide bespoke solutions for any property. With a choice of storage systems and over 26 years’ experience, we can help you design a floodwater solution that fits your property and budget.

Types of Stormwater Attenuation Tanks & Equipment

Stormwater Attenuation relies on the ability to trap and store floodwater, then release it slowly into its natural drainage pathways. A good Stormwater Attenuation system must effectively perform all three.

An Elevator system raises the level of the ground, creating a space beneath it for floodwater to collect. Modular in design and up to 2.5m deep, this tank can easily be accessed for inspection and maintenance.

Stormwater Crates work similarly and are ideal for groundwater infiltration. They allow up to 97% of their volume to hold water and can withstand up to 80-tonne vehicles parked above them. They are an efficient, cost-effective, and low-maintenance flood control solution.

Another option is to use Stormwater Attenuation Tanks and Soakaway Crates to collect and store water from a wider area through connected pipes, consolidating it in a central tank for controlled distribution.
