Beginners Guide to Linear Drainage Systems (incl. slot drains & channel drains)

If you’ve ever wondered what the difference is between channel drainage, slot drain or linear drain — or if they’re just one and the same — you’re not alone. Here’s a useful guide to the different types of surface water management systems available.

What is Surface Water Management and Linear Drainage Systems?

Surface water management is the process of managing the course water takes over land to prevent flooding. Surface water flooding occurs when intense rainfall overwhelms drainage capacities. Good surface water management is about making sure that rain can drain effectively through our environment.

There are a number of different methods used to manage surface water runoff, including linear drainage systems like channel drainage and slot drains, traditional gullies, open dish channels, and French drains. Channel drainage, linear drainage and slot drainage are often used interchangeably, but there are distinct differences between them. Collectively, they are all linear drainage systems — meaning they collect surface water runoff along their entire length, as opposed to traditional gullies which collect at single points.

What is Channel Drainage?

A channel drain is a type of linear drain designed to remove large quantities of water from paved, tarmac, or concrete areas. This generic term refers to linear systems that incorporate a channel together with an inlet detail embedded in the surface.

Key distinctions include:

  • Typically consists of an open channel covered by a removable grate
  • The channel is longer than it is wide and designed to contain the flow from the surrounding surface
  • Channel drains are typically structural formers that may or may not be load-bearing without the correct surround detail

The channel body of these systems can be manufactured in polymer concrete, concrete plastic or steel. Grates can be made from polypropylene (plastic), ductile iron, cast iron, stainless steel, galvanised steel, aluminium, or concrete/stone, and can be heel-guard, perforated, slotted, decorative, solid, or permeable.

Channel drainage can be used on pathways, driveways, car parks, commercial settings, swimming pools, sports areas, and many more places.

What is a Slot Drain?

A slot drain is another type of linear drain used for surface water collection. Unlike traditional drains, it does not have a removable grate. Its narrow slot design makes it less visible when installed, providing a cleaner, more aesthetic finish.

Key distinctions include:

  • Does not have a removable grate
  • Slot describes its appearance in the ground — making it less obtrusive and visually appealing
  • Often used in areas subject to heavy loading where movable parts should be avoided
  • More advanced slot systems, although not load-bearing, facilitate the construction of uninterrupted pavements

As with channel systems, the materials used to manufacture slot drains can vary from polymer concrete to plastic and steel.

Slot drain can be used on pathways, driveways, car parks, commercial settings, airports, ports, and many more places.

Why use a Slot Drain over a standard Channel Drain?

Here are some of the key advantages of slot drain over channel drain:

  1. Sleeker design
In contrast to channel drainage, which is wider and covered with heavy grates, slot drains are narrower with less visible material, offering a more aesthetically pleasing design.
  2. More cost effective
Slot drains are easier to clean and maintain, as they don’t require grate removal, saving time and cost.
  3. Control odour
Channel drains can collect standing water and sediment, causing odours. Slot drains reduce this risk and are easier to clean thoroughly.
  4. Fewer replacements
Grates can corrode or break over time. Slot systems eliminate that concern entirely.
  5. Safer
Heavy grates can cause injury if mishandled or fail under weight. Slot systems remove this risk.
