About the Business
Kingsbury Pallets Ltd is a successful Midlands-based pallet recycling company. They collect, sort, repair, disassemble, heat treat, recycle, and distribute over 40,000 pallets per week.
The Challenge
As a fast-growing business, Kingsbury Pallets required additional space to expand operations. In 2012, they acquired a new 5-acre site at Lichfield Industrial Estate, which included a large industrial unit, car parking facilities, and an external storage yard.
The external yard — covering almost 2 acres — previously had a loose stone surface, suitable for its former use as a vehicle rental depot. However, with the introduction of forklift trucks with small solid wheels, the surface needed upgrading. The goal was to create a robust concrete yard with:
- Gentle gradients for smooth vehicle movement
- Efficient surface water drainage
- A non-slip finish for safety
Jon Towers, Managing Director of Kingsbury Pallets, approached Cotterill Civils after a successful previous collaboration. Our team worked closely with structural engineers to design a concrete slab and drainage system tailored to the site’s operational demands.
The Results
Construction began in January 2013 and was completed in April — despite challenging winter weather conditions. Cotterill Civils installed a crated surface water attenuation system to minimise surface water runoff and significantly reduce sewerage rates for the client.
The team maintained project momentum throughout the harsh winter by using mobile weather protection tents to shield work areas, ensuring deadlines and quality standards were met.
