We’ve been helping farmers to construct farm buildings for over 30 years, earning a reputation for quality, reliability, and craftsmanship. Here’s an example of a major project we recently completed — building a grain drying, storage, and handling facility for F.W. Rowe & Sons.
About the Business
F.W. Rowe & Sons is a well-established, third-generation farming business based near Tamworth, Staffordshire. Their farming and contracting operations span over 5,000 acres across Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Leicestershire, and Derbyshire. The business grows a variety of crops, including wheat, barley, oilseed rape, and peas, as well as 130 acres of potatoes.
The Challenge
Brothers David and Philip Rowe had embarked on a major farmstead redevelopment to create a new operational centre. Their vision was to build a facility that would provide:
- 30,000 tonnes of grain storage
- Grain drying and handling systems
- Weighbridges
- Workshops and machinery storage
- Fertiliser storage and sprayer filling areas
- Modern office facilities
What We Did
Phase 1 of the project began in February 2015 and involved the erection of two large spans for grain storage, complete with underfloor cooling systems. Cotterill Civils collaborated closely with David and Philip to develop a safe construction phase plan and innovative technical solutions.
This included the complex pouring of 6-metre-high in-situ concrete walls and the installation of precise below-floor ducting systems to support efficient grain aeration.
Once the ducting and wall structures were in place, our team poured the concrete flooring using advanced laser screed technology and ride-on power float finishers. The result was a highly durable, smooth, and easy-to-clean surface ideal for agricultural operations.
The Results
“This was a particularly complex and detailed job that was subject to design changes as it progressed. We wanted someone who would work with us to overcome problems and come up with innovative solutions at each critical stage. We wanted a very high standard of workmanship and good attention to detail. The guys from Cotterill Civils were incredibly helpful and have helped us make the project a real success. I would have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone else or using them again myself.”
