In the wake of the Coronavirus crisis, the UK government has launched plans to invest record amounts in the construction sector to turbocharge the economy. As Boris Johnson put it — it’s time to “build, build, build.”
On Tuesday, the Prime Minister confirmed a £5bn capital investment package to build homes and infrastructure, including:
- £1.5bn for hospital maintenance, mental health facility upgrades, and A&E improvements
- £100m for 29 road projects — including bridge repairs in Sandwell and improvements to the A15 in the Humber region
- Over £1bn for a new schools building programme
- £12bn for affordable homes, creating 180,000 new properties over eight years
A new task force — Project Speed — was also announced to cut red tape and deliver projects faster. These measures include:
- Allowing a broader range of commercial buildings to convert to residential use without a full planning application
- Permitting builders to demolish and rebuild redundant buildings as homes without standard planning procedures
- Introducing a fast-track approval process for homeowners to build additional space above their properties (subject to neighbour consultation)
Johnson said: “With every flood-defending culvert that we dig, with every railway station, hospital or school that we build, we will be tackling the next wave of this crisis by helping to create thousands of high-paid, high-skilled jobs.”
He continued: “Because we know in our hearts that furloughing cannot go on forever, and as the economy recovers we also know that the jobs that many people had in January are not coming back — at least not in that form. We know that is the biggest and most immediate economic challenge that we face.”
