Construction sector to continue during the lockdown

The construction sector is one of the few sectors that can remain open throughout the second national lockdown in England. This is good news for our customers as it means they don’t need to down tools!

During the last lockdown, earlier this year, there was significant confusion around whether the construction sector could remain open and this resulted in a number of construction sites having to close. Having greater clarity this time around means that construction workers can get on with their jobs as long as they are adhering to social distancing and Covid-19 safety guidelines.

The second lockdown will last from 5 November until 2 December. Whether it will be extended will depend on the impact of the lockdown and the R rate at the end of this period.

What does it mean for construction workers?

To help curb further financial strain, Johnson announced that the furlough scheme is to be extended until December with employees receiving 80% of their current salary for hours not worked.

According to Build UK, tradespeople can also continue to work in people’s homes as long as no one is showing symptoms of Covid-19. Hotels can also remain operational to provide accommodation for workers. The body has said sites are advised to review their social-distancing measures and remind the workforce of the importance of complying with site operating procedures while on site.
