Construction Sector to Continue During the Lockdown

The construction sector is one of the few industries permitted to remain open during England’s second national lockdown — great news for our customers, who can continue working safely and without interruption.

During the first lockdown earlier this year, there was significant confusion over whether construction sites could stay open, leading to widespread closures. This time, the government has provided clear guidance: construction work can continue, provided that workers follow social-distancing and COVID-19 safety measures.

The second national lockdown runs from 5 November to 2 December. Whether it is extended will depend on infection rates and the overall impact of current restrictions.

What does it mean for construction workers?

To help reduce financial pressure, the government has extended the furlough scheme until December. Employees can receive up to 80% of their salary for hours not worked.

According to Build UK, tradespeople may continue working inside occupied homes provided that no one is displaying symptoms of COVID-19. Hotels can also remain open to accommodate construction and site workers.

Sites are advised to review their social-distancing measures and remind staff of the importance of following approved site operating procedures at all times.
