We supply high-quality smoking shelters designed to meet the diverse needs of businesses, institutions, and public spaces. Built to withstand a variation of weather conditions, our smoking shelters are designed to have a long lifespan.
What is a smoking shelter?
A smoking shelter is a designated area specifically installed to provide a safe and comfortable space for smokers while controlling and minimising the impact on non-smokers and the surrounding environment. These shelters are commonly found in public places such as:
- Airports
- Train stations
- Bus stops
- Office buildings
- Universities and colleges
- Hospitals
- Shopping centres
- Sports stadiums
- Public parks
- Work sites
How many people can the shelter accommodate?
The amount of people our shelters can accommodate largely depends on its size. Generally speaking, our smallest shelter (1 x 2m Burbank) can accommodate up to 4 people. Our largest smoking shelter (5m x 3m Inglewood) is typically suitable for up to 12 people.
Do I need planning permission to install a smoking shelter?
The answer is - it depends! There are a few factors to consider such as the size of the shelter being installed, and the distance away from a building. Planning permission will usually be required if a permanent structure is being installed, especially if the floor space is over 30 metres squared. A smoking shelter should be positioned no less than 1.5m away from a building, to minimise fire risks. We recommend consulting your local authorities to confirm if you need planning permission, given your individual circumstances.
What are smoking shelters made of?
Smoking shelters can be made from a variety of materials depending on your budget, desired aesthetic and application. These include wood, metal, plastic, glass as well as composite materials.
Our Burbank and Inglewood smoking shelters are supplied with a galvanised mild steel frame and 4mm PETG roof. This type of material is highly durable, and can provide protection from the elements.
What is the expected lifespan of a smoking shelter?
This depends on the material used for your shelter.
With the proper maintenance and care, our smoking shelters can have a lifespan of up to 25 years. Regular cleaning, inspection, and repairs can help prolong the lifespan of the shelter by preventing corrosion, structural damage, and other issues that may arise over time.
Is the smoking shelter easy to install?
Again, this depends on the type of smoking shelter you choose.
In the case of our smoking shelters, they are specifically designed to be assembled on-site quickly and easily.
Are there any specific maintenance requirements?
It’s important to maintain your smoking shelter in order to maximise its lifespan. Regular maintenance includes:
- Cleaning - this includes emptying ashtrays, keeping the shelter free from debris and clearing any litter which may accumulate around the structure.
- Inspecting for damage - make sure to regularly inspect the shelter for any damages which may include cracks, broken panels for rusty metal. By addressing these early on, the lifespan of the shelter will be extended.
- Keep the area around the shelter clear - this will allow for good airflow and visibility.
Are there options for seating or other amenities inside the shelter?
This will depend on the size of the shelter that you choose.
At Cotterill Civils, we sell perch benches which offer the ideal solution for seating facilities within a smoking shelter. We also supply wall ashtrays so you can purchase the complete package for your on-site smoking area requirements.
Does the shelter come with a warranty?
This will depend on the manufacturer so you will need to check at purchase.
In the case of our smoking shelters, they are supplied with a 12 month warranty.
Can the shelter be relocated if needed?
Yes, smoking shelters can be relocated. Here are some general steps involved in relocating a smoking shelter:
- Begin by disassembling the shelter according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Once disassembled, the shelter components can be transported to the new location. This may require a suitable vehicle such as a truck or trailer to achieve.
- Once the components have been transported to the new location, they can be reassembled following the same assembly instructions used during the initial installation.
- Before reassembling the shelter, ensure that the new site is suitably prepared. This may involve levelling the ground, providing a suitable foundation if required.
- Once the site is prepared, reassemble the shelter according to the manufacturer's instructions. Ensure that all components are securely fastened and that the shelter is safe for use.
What are the benefits of installing a smoking shelter?
Having a designated smoking area benefits both smokers and non-smokers in a variety of scenarios.
Improves cleanliness
Smoking shelters with wall ashtrays massively help to reduce litter from cigarette butts, as there is a convenient disposal point for them. Cigarette butts are the most common form of litter in the UK, so efforts to reduce this, smoking shelters provide an eco-friendly solution.
Prevents negative effects of second-hand smoke
By having a designated smoking area, non-smokers can choose to actively avoid the area if they are concerned about breathing in second-hand smoke.
Regulatory compliance
Workplaces providing smoking shelters not only display a consideration for those who smoke, but also supports compliance with smoke-free regulations.
Reduced fire risk
Smoking shelters often include designated ashtrays for cigarette butts and ash. These containers are specifically designed to contain hot ashes and extinguish cigarette butts safely, which therefore reduces the risk of accidental fires caused by improperly discarded cigarettes.
Do I have to provide a smoking area for employees?
According to UK law, employers do not legally have to provide a smoking area for employees. However, we recommend installing a smoking shelter for the reasons stated above. If colleagues do not have a designated smoking area, then they may smoke outside of the workplace building which can be perceived unprofessional. It also poses a health and safety risk by increasing a fire risk and exposing other members of staff to second hand smoke.
Providing staff with a permanent, designated area to smoke means that all parties are satisfied and comfortable. Even if it's not a legal requirement, providing a smoking shelter may be considered a courtesy to employees and can contribute to a more comfortable work environment.
What are the rules for smoking shelters?
Since 2007, the UK government banned all smoking in indoor public areas and workplaces, hence the requirement for outdoor smoking areas. A smoking shelter needs to be installed at least 1.5m away from a building, or any other obstacles such as a wall, trellis etc. They also need to have appropriate signage to clearly display the designated smoking area. Smoking shelters cannot be substantially or fully enclosed.
