New slurry storage grant for farmers

New slurry storage grant for farmers

Good news for our customers looking to store slurry. A new slurry storage grant will be launched 6th December as part of the Farming Investment Fund and it covers some of our products.

The new grant has been designed, along with a number of other measures, to help livestock farmers store and use slurry in a safe, efficient way that maximises crop nutrition and minimise nutrient losses into the environment. The grant will help livestock farmers already using a slurry system to upgrade their slurry storage to provide six months storage capacity and to cover grant funded stores with impermeable covers.

The first round of funding will be overseen by the Rural Payments Agency (RPA) with £13 million available for livestock farmers across England in total, while individual grants of between £25,000 and £250,000 are on offer. Successful applicants could receive a maximum 50 percent grant towards the cost of:

  • A range of slurry store types
  • Impermeable covers
  • Extra equipment like pumps, pipes and safety equipment

The new grant can be used to:

  • Replace existing stores that are no longer fit for purpose
  • Build additional storage, if your current stores are compliant
  • Expand otherwise compliant storage

Are you eligible?

All pig, dairy and beef farmers already using a slurry system can apply for the grant - both land owning and tenant farmers.

This is the first round of grant funding from the Rural Payments Agency (RPA) for slurry storage, therefore not everyone will get a grant in the first round. They will prioritise projects that have the biggest environmental impact, focusing on those located near protected sites.

How to apply?

There will be a 2 stage application process.

Stage 1 - The RPA will ask you questions about the store including:

  • Current and planned storage capacity
  • Location
  • Status of planning permission

Stage 2 - An application form must be completed and sent with supporting documents to RMA. You will also need to complete a project plan including:

  • Details about the store design and location
  • How you calculated the storage capacity needs
  • Confirmation that the store meets with the storing slurry rules and build standard requirements
