Will a rainwater harvesting system save me money?
If you answer yes to the below questions, then the likelihood is that a rainwater harvesting solution would offer you a cost effective solution:
- Do you pay for your water through a meter?
- Do you have a large roof area such as a farm or industrial building?
- Is the majority of your water usage for non potable applications, such as crop spraying, vehicle washing, livestock watering, irrigation etc?
Our team of experts will be able to provide you with further advice based upon your needs and roof space.
Above or below ground rainwater harvesting solution?
Most domestic applications, where space and aesthetics are usually a concern, below ground storage offers a neat solution. However most domestic rainwater harvesting systems are not commercially viable, they are installed either because it is a planning condition or the owner likes the green credentials of doing so.
In an industrial or agricultural situation, the harvested volumes are much much greater and space is not such an issue. To store large volumes of water underground is very expensive and detracts from what you are trying to achieve. So in answer to the question, wherever possible we aim to store the main volume of harvested roof water above ground. Our premium systems actually combine both underground and above ground in a ratio of around 1:300
Do I need planning permission for a rainwater harvesting system?
Normally, planning permission is not necessary. There is no hard or fast rule across the UK, it is down to the discretion of the local authority. Planners favour building applications that include rainwater harvesting. Official pressure is on to reduce mains water consumption and alleviate flood threats. Rainwater harvesting helps with both these issues. Often now rainwater harvesting is a planning condition on new approvals.
Do I need a licence to harvest rainwater?
No, there is no licencing requirement for rainwater harvesting, in fact if you pay existing abstraction costs for bole hole or river water you may be able to reduce these.
