Headwalls

Minimise erosion at the point of discharge with headwalls

Our headwalls are used to protect the end of the drain outfall as well as protect the watercourse embankment from erosion. They are a cost-effective alternative to in-situ structures for connecting pipework discharging into open watercourses. We provide a wide range of sizes to suit your specific requirements and can also provide customisable sizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are headwalls installed?

A headwall is installed at the end of a drain outfall, connecting the pipework to open watercourses such as streams and ponds.

They're installed at the end of stream-crossing structures as well.

Headwalls prevent soil erosion around piping in areas where stormwater is unpredictable. Additionally, they also provide support to bridges and roads that run above the piping by anchoring the drainage pipe to stop it from moving.

At Cotterill Civils, we can design customised headwalls to suit any ground conditions. We also supply silt trap inlets that prevent soil, debris, and sediment from entering the point of discharge.

We recommend a silt trap for those drain outfalls installed in rural or agricultural settings.

For more information on headwall placements and settings, get in touch with our team of professionals via our online enquiry form. Or, you can give us a call on 01213513230 and we’ll be in touch as soon as we can.

What headwall sizes do you stock?

We supply the standard 150mm and 300mm sizes, but we also provide customisable sizes, so you’re sure to find one that fits your needs. Our 80-190mm knock out glass reinforced cement headwall is the smallest size we stock. The largest size we supply without a silt trap is the 300mm cut out glass reinforced cement headwall. Headwall grates are sold separately unless stated otherwise and will need to be purchased to prevent unwanted entry. We also stock GRC silt trap inlets to suit pipes up to 360mm. They are available in a curved or square design and are ideal for use in the agricultural situation. For more information regarding custom-made headwall sizes, get in touch with our team of experts via our online enquiry form, and we’ll be in touch as soon as possible.

Are headwalls expensive?

Our headwalls are highly affordable and offer a cost-effective solution to outfall connections. Headwall costs vary and are dependent on: • Size – the bigger the headwall, the more it will cost. We stock the standard 150mm and 300mm sizes, but we also provide customisable sizes, so you’re guaranteed to find one that fits your project. • Whether the headwall package includes a steel grate – if it doesn’t, you may have to buy one separately. We supply galvanised steel grates to suit 150mm and 300mm headwalls. • If your waterway point of discharge requires a silt trap inlet – a device designed to catch dirt and sediment. A silt trap inlet is advised for pipes outfalls in agricultural settings. At Cotterill Civils, we stock GRC silt trap inlets to suit pipes up to 360mm. They are available in a square or curved design. At Cotterill Civils, we guarantee competitive prices without compromising on quality.

Are headwalls better than in-situ structures ?

In-situ structures are constructed on-site and are much more expensive to build and fit. Pre-made concrete solutions stocked by us are more affordable and reduce installation prices and times. We have a range of headwall structures available in different sizes, so you’re guaranteed to find one that’s right for your project. The smallest size we stock without a silt trap is the 80-190mm knock out glass reinforced cement headwall. The largest we supply is the 300mm cut out glass reinforced cement headwall. You may have to purchase a headwall grate separately unless stated that it is included. We also supply curved and square GRC silt trap inlets to suit pipes up to 360mm. Silt trap inlets are perfect for use in agricultural settings as they prevent unwanted dirt and debris from entering the piping. If you’re looking for a quick and cost-effective solution that guarantees longevity and prevents erosion, look no further than a pre-constructed headwall.
