The septic tank is the cheapest and simplest form of off mains drainage. They still often offer a quick cost effective solution to certain situations.
A septic tank is basically a relatively small holding tank that allows solids to settle out and collect in the bottom of the tank and then the partially treated liquor to run off and disperse in a soak away. A septic tank should only be installed in porous soil conditions.

Unlike a sewage treatment plant, a septic tank only partially treats sewage. Instead of an aerobic process, a septic tank treats sewage by an anaerobic process; the byproduct of this is methane which gives the odour often noticeable around a septic tank. The effluent from a septic tank is a major cause of pollution. Some areas of the UK and Ireland now prohibit the installation of septic tanks. The soil porosity has a major bearing on whether a septic tank will work or not. Please call us for more advice on installing a septic tank if you are uncertain about the laws.
