Installation of stormwater attenuation solution at Bournville RFCCotterill Civils
Stormwater management has become an increasing issue for developers. With every new development, they now need to ensure they have systems in place to control the quantity of runoff and water quality.
We’re one of the UK’s leading specialists when it comes to managing stormwater. We can design and install a stormwater attenuation solution to meet your specific needs and budget. Here’s an example of a recent stormwater attenuation solution we installed at Bournville RFC in Edgbaston, Birmingham, for Phil Day Sports.
The stormwater management challenge
Bournville RFC had been gifted a new site for its rugby club by Birmingham City Council and Sport England alongside a capital contribution grant towards its redevelopment. The 14-acre site was formerly Avery Berkel’s recreation ground and had been unused for around 30 years. It was being brought back into use as a state-of-the-art community rugby facility ready for Bournville’s 2018/19 season.
Phil Day Sports had been appointed to install the all weather artificial grass pitch and two full-size grass pitches. Founded in the late 1990s at its Worcestershire base, Phil Day Sports is a leading sports turf contractor and specialist in the sports amenity sector.
As part of the project, Phil Day Sports asked us to design, supply and install a stormwater attenuation system to ensure their work met with Defra’s Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) regulations. SuDS is a natural approach to managing drainage in and around properties and other developments. It works by slowing and holding back the water that runs off from a site, allowing natural processes to break down pollutants
In early 2018, we started work on the installation of a 828m3 stormwater attenuation tank. The system was created using stormwater attenuation crates, which offer an economic and versatile solution to stormwater management. As part of the work, the individual crates were lowered into the excavated area and were then interconnected to form one huge below ground holding tank. Once assembled, the crates were also wrapped in a special membrane to allow water discharge to the subsurface, as well as prevent any soil or sand particles to go through.
During heavy rainfall conditions, the below ground tank fills up and holds the resulting stormwater. The collected stormwater then slowly soaks away into the drainage system or ground water table over a more sustained period of time, preventing localised flooding.
Andrew Cotterill, MD of Cotterill Civils, commented: “We were delighted to work with such a leading sports contractor as Phil Day Sports. Together, we made a great team and helped to ensure the project was delivered to a high standard and on time. One of the great things about working with Phil Day Sports is that they share the same work ethic and commitment to excellence as us.”
Toby Grace, Business Development Manager at Phil Day Sports, commented: “Cotterill Civils did a top notch job for us. Throughout the process I found the staff to be extremely helpful and friendly. The work was also carried out in a very professional as well as timely manner. I’d definitely use them again.”
