Brand new, state of the art grain drying, storage and handling facility

We’ve been helping farmers to construct farm buildings for over 30 years and have built up a reputation for the quality of our work. Here is an example of a project we recently undertook to build a grain drying, storage, and handling facility.

About the business:

F. W. Rowe & Sons is a well established third generation farming business based on the outskirts of Tamworth, Staffordshire. Its farming and contracting operation spread over 5000 acres of combinable crops in Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Leicestershire, and Derbyshire. Crops grown include; wheat, barley, oilseed rape, and peas, as well as 130 acres of potatoes.

The challenge:

David and Philip Rowe run the business and had recently embarked on a farmstead project to create a new operating centre. They wanted a farmstead that would provide 30,000 tons of storage, grain drying, handling, weighbridges, workshops, machinery storage, fertiliser storage, sprayer filling, and offices.

What we did:

Phase 1 of the project started in February 2015 with the erection of two spans for grain storage with underfloor cooling.

Cotterill Civils worked with David and Philip to bring together a safe construction phase plan, innovative solutions for pouring 6 metre high in situ concrete walling and below floor ducting systems.

Once all the walls and ducting were accurately in place a concrete floor was poured by using laser screed equipment and ride-on power float finishers to give a highly durable easy sweep surface.

The results:

David Rowe commented: “This was a particularly complex and detailed job that was subject to design changes as it progressed. We wanted someone who would work with us to overcome problems and come up with innovative solutions at each critical stage. We wanted a very high standard of workmanship and good attention to detail. The guys from Cotterill Civils were incredibly helpful and have helped us make the project a real success. I would have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone else or using them again myself.”
