How to connect culvert pipe

How to connect culvert pipe

When it comes to connecting culvert pipe – it depends largely on the type of pipe.  It is essentially a big version of cutting normal pipe.

The difference when cutting culvert pipe is that people tend to use sandbags filled with concrete or a headwall on the end, as these are large pipes and require holding down to ensure stability.

There are so many different types of culvert pipe. Each type requires slightly different methods of connecting.

Connecting HDPE Plastic Culvert Pipe

Depending on whether the connection needs to be 1005 water tight or not depends on the connection method, couplers and seals, or rubber couplers with jubilee clips are the most common method but it can also butt fusion (welding). This is done by applying heat to the prepared pipe ends and applying a predetermined force, whilst pushing them together. This then makes a permanent butt fusion joint.

This can be a little tricky as culverts tend to be larger – hence the suggestion of using sandbags filled with concrete to hold the ends in place.

Connecting Galvanised Steel Culvert Pipe

When connecting galvanised steel culvert pipe, two steel couplers have to be used to ensure a smooth and strong connection. Once again, using sandbags or a headwall to keep the pipe down.
